Louth Sinn Féin has selected three candidates for the Drogheda Urban and Drogheda Rural constituencies for the 2024 Local Council Elections to be held in June next year.
In Drogheda Rural, Cllr Tom Cunningham was selected while in Drogheda Urban, sitting councillor Joanna Byrne will be joined by first time candidate Laura Clinton.
Ruairí Ó Murchú TD chaired the proceedings held at the Fairways Hotel in Dundalk on Tuesday evening last.
Speaking after the convention, Council group leader Kevin Meenan said “we have a strong team in Drogheda and indeed across Louth and we are seeking to expand that team to effect change here at local level, change that has been denied to people by successive government parties.
“We are consistent in our representation and are a voice to those who feel they are not being heard. We want people to know that ‘we hear you’ and we need to get a bigger team into the council to put an end to the ‘pact system’ and to deliver equality and real meaningful politics.
“I want to wish all our new candidates well, they are facing the electorate for the first time but they bring fresh ideas and talents to the table and I look forward to working with them.”
Sinn Féin will run eight candidates in Dundalk. In Dundalk South sitting councillor Kevin Meenan will be joined by Aideen Smith, Jimmy Myers and Sionainn McCann.
In the Dundalk Carlingford constituency sitting councillor Antóin Watters will be joined by Fiona Mhic Conchoille and mother and son team, Kathleen Byrne and Seán Ó Broin.
All selected candidate’s names will now be sent to the Party for ratification.
