Uisce Éireann is reminding households to take a few simple steps to protect their homes ahead of the cold snap expected this weekend and to help avoid disrupted water supplies and potentially costly repairs.
A sudden drop in temperatures can cause pipes to freeze and burst, particularly after periods of heavy rainfall that may have left ground conditions unstable or caused damage to pipework inside and outside the home.
By preparing in advance, homeowners can reduce the risk of damage and unnecessary stress during cold weather.
Practical tips for households:
- Insulate exposed pipes and tanks in attics, under sinks and in unheated spaces.
- Fix dripping taps and small leaks early to prevent pipes freezing and blocking.
- Check you know where your stop valve is so you can turn off the water quickly if needed.
- Keep cold draughts out by sealing gaps around windows, doors and pipe entry points.
- Avoid leaving taps running, as this does not prevent freezing and can make problems worse.
Margaret Attridge, Head of Water Operations at Uisce Éireann, said:
We know how upsetting and disruptive burst pipes can be for families and businesses. Taking just a few simple steps now can make all the difference during a cold snap. By insulating pipes, checking for small leaks, and knowing where your stop valve is, you can really reduce the risk of damage in your home.
