Sherlock sisters to open Marcy Hotel in West Street

Valerie Sherlock, the former Manager of the Westcourt Hotel, and her sister Sabrina have announced that they are to reopen the premises under the name of The Marcy Hotel.

The closure in July 2020 of the Westcourt, which had been a thriving business for many years, was met with widespread shock, especially as it had been upgraded at great expense just a couple of years earlier. The closure was put down to a lack of visitors brought on by the Covid pandemic.

Between them The Westcourt and the White Horse Hotel before it had been the at the heart of the social and commercial life of Drogheda for over 260 years. Hopefully the Sherlock sisters will be successful in bringing the Marcy to fill that position.

Valerie and Sabrina Sherlock, who have spent their careers working in the Irish hotel industry, say that the Marcy Hotel, which will open to its first guests in May, will be contemporary in design whilst honouring the wonderful history of the building on West Street in the heart of the town.

Personalities to have stayed in the hotel over the years include Michael Collins, Wolfe Tone, Daniel O’Connell, Charles Stewart Parnell, Éamon de Valera, C.S Lewis, Woodrow Wilson and Brendan Behan.

The Marcy Hotel will open in phases during 2022. Initially the duo will focus on providing overnight accommodation, with plans to re-open the bar and restaurant later in the year.

Valerie knows how much the central Drogheda hotel means to local people and is very excited to open the doors again: “Both Sabrina and I have been in hospitality all of our working lives” she said.

“We know that the difference between a “hotel” and “hospitality” is the experience you have, the people you interact with and how they unlock the secrets of the local area for you.

The Westcourt, and the White Horse Hotel before it, were at the heart of the social and commercial life of Drogheda for over 260 years. Hopefully the Sherlock sisters can bring the Marcy to fill that position.

“Drogheda is a wonderful location for tourists and we look forward to offering our visitors a great experience to help them make the most of their stay.”

An investment by the hoteliers will see the exterior of the landmark hotel get a facelift with a new colour scheme and restyling of the hotel lobby, corridors and stairwells. A schedule of refurbishment of the bedrooms is also underway.

Online bookings for bedrooms will be live in mid April and the hotel will be open to its first guests from Saturday, May 7.
