Senator Alison Comyn was humbled and honoured to be mentioned as a possible Presidential candidate after her name was publicly mentioned by senior people in Fianna Fail.
The speculation about her was rife on Newstalk Radio and it appeared to be coming from Fianna Fail sources.
Government insiders say The Toiseach Micheal Martin has been very impressed by her performance in the Seanad since he appointed her to a seat in the Upper House.
Yesterday Senator Comyn said:” I am genuinely honoured and touched by the suggestion that I could be considered for President of Ireland – whether now or in the future. It’s a privilege to serve our country and to be even mentioned in this context is humbling.
“My focus remains on the work I do in the Seanad , representing the people of Ireland but I will always be guided by a commitment to serve our nation in any way I can.
“I am deeply passionate about representing and serving the people of Louth too and especially the community of Drogheda. Being considered for such a role reinforces my commitment to continue working tirelessly for the people I am proud to represent.
“I genuinely hope suitable candidates can be selected to run. for the most treasured of positions and the last three holders of this prestigious position are indeed giant shoes to fill.”
The political world was shocked on Thursday when the red hot favourite Ardee woman Mairead McGuinness pulled out of the Presidential Race for health reasons.
Her party Fine Gael are now scrambling to replace her with either Heather Humphries or Sean Kelly names being mentioned.
The Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald has yet to decide if she will run for the Aras.
The Independent Galway TD Catherine Connolly is now the only candidate in the field at the moment and the bookie has her favourite to win.
