In response to growing concerns over road safety, particularly at the junction of Watery Lane and Barrahoule Lane, significant road surface upgrades are set to take place in Tullyallen.
This follows a motion at the February Drogheda Borough Council meeting, from Independent Councillor for Drogheda Rural, Declan Power which aims to address longstanding issues and enhance the overall road infrastructure in the area.
Councillor Power emphasised the importance of prioritising pedestrian and cyclist safety at the junction.
“Watery Lane has taken a hammering over the last couple of years,” he said and also highlighted the mixed usage of the road by residents, agricultural machinery, and Bus Éireann.
Turning his attention to the Tullyallen to Collon Road, Councillor Power expressed concerns over speeding and poor road markings, particularly off the M1.
“This road has no road markings for a couple of hundred metres and is poorly lit,” he said, underscoring the need for improved visibility and safety measures, especially during adverse weather conditions.
Councillor Power extended his gratitude to the Louth County Council team for their commitment to enhancing the Watery and Barrahoule Lane junction and welcomed the proposed upgrades which include road markings, reflective bollards, and 100 metres of road resurfacing with drainage work at Watery Lane, signify a significant step towards creating a safer and more sustainable road environment.
He also stressed the importance of extending the footpath at Watery Lane to ensure the safety of pedestrians who, he said were currently being “…forced onto the road that is heavily used emphasising the urgent need for extended footpath infrastructure.”
As the project progresses, Councillor Power reaffirmed his dedication to collaborating with the active travel team to prioritise pedestrian safety and accessibility of extending the footpath at Watery Lane.
