Power asks Council to reopen toilets at Clogherhead Beach

People caught short have no choice but to defecate in the dunes

Independent Councillor Declan Power wants Louth County Council to re-open the public toilets at Clogherhead beach as soon as possible or at the very least put in place temporary toilet facilities.

He says that the closure of the toilets is limiting people’s capacity to exercise freely and creating a significant public health risk as some people have no option but to relieve themselves in the open.

“The public toilets at Port Beach and Port Oriel are open and I am calling on the Louth County Council to do the same for the toilets at Clogherhead Beach” Councillor Power said.

“I am liaising with Louth County Council to get a solution for re-opening these toilets and the matter is now with the corporate section of Council. Until a solution is found, temporary toilets should be put in place with proper Covid measures.

“… Last weekend, people walking in the dunes reported seeing human excrement … This is not acceptable. This toilet closure is causing great anxiety, distress, and frustration for beach users, especially those with disabilities, medical conditions, and pregnant women.”

“You can’t re-open some toilets and not open others. Clogherhead Beach is busy every day and as the clocks go forward this weekend, Easter fast approaching, and into the summer season, the beach will have a higher capacity of users and nowhere to go to the toilet.

“Though Covid restrictions are still in place, this situation is undignified, unhygienic with Clogherhead Beach at risk of losing its Blue Flag status,” Concluded Cllr. Power.
