Postcard to great granny in Galway ends up in Drogheda woman’s mailbox in Boston!

A postcard sent from Ireland destined for a great granny in County Galway, was delivered in error to the home of a Drogheda woman living in Boston on St Patrick’s Day.

Decorated with a child’s colouring and a simple message saying, ‘lots of love Billy,’ the woman whose home it arrived at has ensured it is now on its way back to Ireland.

“Any granny loves to get something and especially from their grandchildren.  I thought we need to get this on it’s way back to where it should be and especially during lockdown,” Paula Craig said from her home in Needham, outside Boston.

Paula, who moved to the US with her husband Michael Curry 21 years ago, found the postcard inside an envelope containing a St Patrick’s Day card from her friend in Drogheda and she believes that in a sorting office, somewhere in Ireland, the postcard probably slipped inside the envelope addressed to her.

She cannot decipher the handwritten name of the great granny it is addressed to, but there is a full address in Tuam, county Galway on it.

Unfortunately there is no information to indicate where in Ireland it originated from so she cannot return it to the sender.

The front of the postcard has green edging and inside that the boy has painstakingly coloured in an orange border and written ‘Great Granny.’

Paula, who with her family had made pre-Covid plans to spend their first Christmas in 18 years back in Ireland last December, has been able to track down an Eircode for the address on the postcard and she posted it to that address yesterday (on Thursday).

She knows that it is important to get something in the mail, especially if you are expecting it. It could be “for someone who is not seeing their family, likely because of the pandemic.”

She enclosed her own letter to the great granny in which she wrote, ‘I hope this finds you well and you are coping during this awful pandemic. The vaccines have started around the World and we will soon be on the other side of this.’

Young Billy obviously loves his great granny but he’s a young man of few words!
