Independent Councillor Kevin Callan has said that the first cuts of grass across the town this year look to be a repeat of the terrible standard of work carried out last year. He is calling for a meeting with officials to discuss the matter before it once again gets totally out of hand for a second year in a row.
“The first calls started to come in to me a few days ago from residents of locations across Drogheda such as Scarlet Crescent where the first cut looks absolutely terrible and which is a really worrying sign of the quality of work to follow over the summer period.
The contract for cutting grass costs in the tens of thousands of euros and well cut green areas are places for the people of the town to enjoy, for kids to play, people to walk and exercise but when this type of below standard cutting is done, it leads to a terrible sight and also is unusable as a recreation space.
Speaking after visiting residents in Scarlet Crescent, Cllr Callan said that once more we see a rubbish job, where grass is not cut correctly, where rubbish is cut through and is spread all over the place. On top of this, a reason given last year for the poor work was No Mow May which assists biodiversity. It’s only mid April and already the place is looking terrible.
“We need pride in the work being carried out, if a contractor is appointed this simply cannot be tolerated, there are no excuses for this such as rain or biodiversity, our parks and green areas belong to those living in the area who have paid their taxes and expect a proper job to be done. This type of work is in stark contrast to residents associations who get the grass in their estates cut by private companies who do a first-rate job.
“It’s only the beginning of summer and this will not be let stand. I will be demanding action by the officials who are signing off on this work. When the council staff were doing this work the place looked immaculate and people felt pride in the town, this standard of work just drags the image of the town down and cannot be tolerated.”
