“The absence of a crossing at this junction is an accident waiting to happen”
Fianna Fail Councillor James Byrne brought a Notice of Motion to the meeting of the Drogheda Borough Council on Monday seeking a pedestrian crossing at the junction of the Bryanstown cross route and Blackbush Lane.
He said a pedestrian crossing was needed to make access to local schools at the junction of the Bryanstown cross route and Blackbush Lane adjacent to Calvary cemetery safer.
He was told however, that it was too late to make it on to 2023 budget but it will be considered for inclusion in the Low-Cost Safety scheme for 2024.
Byrne’s motion was “That Louth County Council install a pedestrian crossing at the junction of the Bryanstown crossroute and Blackbush Lane adjacent to Calvary cemetery and Meadowview, to provide safer access to schools for the hundreds of children who travel this route daily.”
Councillor Byrne told Drogheda Life that he accepts the response as a step in the right direction although he is “…frustrated that we have missed the boat with respect to the provisional list of projects for 2023 that has already gone into the Department for approval.
“Some sort of crossing is long overdue in my opinion with hundreds of secondary and primary school students crossing at this point several times a day” he said.
“It is a bit of a blind left turn for motorists coming from the Beamore Road heading down towards the graveyard” he added.
“It’s great to see so many choosing to walk to school and to be fair the cross route provides safe access for the most part.
“I just feel that the absence of a crossing at this junction is an accident waiting to happen” he said.
