Two much loved pantomime stars who have brought years of fun, laughter and festive spirit to Drogheda have been announced as the grand marshals of this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade.
Fiona O’Connell and John Kirwan will proudly lead the parade through the streets of Drogheda as part of the national celebrations on the Boyneside, with tens of thousands of spectators expected to attend.
Their selection marks a special milestone for the local arts community, as the Drogheda Pantomime Society celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. The society has played a major role in cultural life in the town for generations, entertaining families year after year and providing a creative outlet for performers of all ages.
Fiona O’Connell’s journey with the pantomime began at a young age when she first took to the stage as a child. Over the years she starred in numerous productions and now plays a central role behind the scenes as executive producer and writer, helping to shape the shows that have become a Christmas tradition for many local families.
John Kirwan, best known to audiences as Simple Simon, has been a constant presence in Drogheda pantomime for decades. His energetic performances and trademark humour have made him a firm favourite with audiences young and old, and his contribution has helped create many lasting memories for theatre goers.
The grand marshals were officially unveiled at the launch of this year’s St Patrick’s Day Festival, held on Thursday night. The announcement was warmly received, reflecting the affection the town holds for both performers and the wider pantomime community.

Mayor of Drogheda Michelle Hall praised the dedication of the parade committee and those involved in organising the festival.
She said: Congrats to the Panto on their 75th year … .as a former chorus girl I know the hard work and hours that go into their productions. This year will see four days of music, entertainment, and fun galore with Scotch Hall , Louth County Council , the proud sponsors along with LoveDrogheda, Fitz Science, Drogheda Chamber of Commerce and many councillors including myself.
This year’s St Patrick’s Day Festival will run over four days and promises a packed programme of events, including live music, family entertainment and community celebrations across Drogheda. Organisers say the appointment of Fiona O’Connell and John Kirwan as grand marshals is a fitting tribute to the town’s rich theatrical tradition and the volunteers who have kept it alive for 75 years.
