Paddy to pay homage to Wilko Johnson with Christmas gig at McHughs

Well known local solicitor Paddy Goodwin spends much of his working life in court where the rule is you must remain silent unless you are giving evidence.

On Saturday night next, December 17th however, Paddy and his mates from the world of rock and roll will be getting very noisy indeed at a very special Christmas gig in McHughs venue.

Saturday’s gig is partially a homage to the legendary guitarist Wilko Johnson who died last month and was a member of the rock/rhythm and blues band Doctor Feelgood in the 1970s and one of Paddy’s personal heroes.

Wilko’s gig in Johnny Connor’s boxing Club in the late 70’s (or was it the early 80’s?) was a night of rock music that will live for ever in the memories of those lucky enough to have witnessed it and still have a memory.

Sadly Paddy missed that concert, he was either too young or too busy planning his takeover of the world of rock and roll from his famous record shop Rhino Records on Wellington Quay.

“Wilko is one of my all-time heroes” Paddy told Drogheda Life.  “I remember being terribly excited when Dr Feelgood got to number one with their Stupidity live album in 1976!  I will be playing 4 or 5 songs from that album on the night.”

“When Wilko left Dr Feelgood in 1977, he was initially replaced by my old pal Henry McCullough who played at Woodstock with Joe Cocker.

“Henry had witnessed a lot during his many years in Rock and Roll but he had never encountered anything like the Feelgoods!

“He told me a great story about flying over to Belgium in a private plane with them all very drunk and the band taking turns at actually flying the plane.

“For some reason Henry didn’t take up a permanent position with the band!”

Saturday’s gig in McHughs is shaping up to be another night to remember with Anthony Thistlethwaite taking time off from the Saw Doctors to play sax and Henry McCullough’s brother Victor will also be playing.

“There will also be one or two other Surprise Guests” Paddy said.  Support on the night is The Mighty Brush and the gig starts at 9 O’clock.

Wilko Johnson died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Westcliff On Sea in the UK on Monday evening, 21st November 2022. He was 75. Here he is performing All Through The City on Jools Hollands’ Annual Hootenanny in 2014:
