One Cold October Evening — a celebration of Drawda voices

‘One Cold October Evening’ is a drama created and performed by members of Drogheda’s Upstate Theatre Project, it started out as a project for theatre but morphed into an audio recording as a result of the restrictions imposed on them by the pandemic.

Written and performed by Joanne Kieran, Nadine Winters, David Thornton, Kevin Sweeney and Eilis Walsh, ‘One Cold October Evening’ is facilitated and directed by Cathal Thornton with Technical Editor John Mc Govern, it is a feast of voices from old Drawda.

‘One Cold October Evening’ is loosely based on a drowning accident in the 1920’s and includes a host of local characters gleaned from the group’s historic research and their own experiences and impressions of Drogheda and its particular character.

Upstate has a long and celebrated history of looking to people and place for stories. From Ship Street, The Far Side, and The Street, to 2018’s The Immortals, by looking to the history of our hometown and the people who hail from it, they have worked with local people to create many celebratory productions of Drogheda in all its guises.

Scéal Droichead Átha continues Upstate’s 22-year-old practice that has gained national and international renown of producing high quality work about and by the people of the town.

The project is directed by local artist Cathal Thornton who has worked with Upstate Theatre Project on a number of projects including, ‘Storytrail’, ‘The Street’ and ‘Songtrail’. Cathal, a former member of the Droichead Youth Theatre, is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin’s Drama and Theatre Studies and is co-founder of Tailtiu Theatre.

This project would not have been possible without funding from the Arts Council of Ireland. Sit back and enjoy:
