Drogheda Spring Clean Weekend to take place in March

One issue that affects both East Meath and Drogheda and in deed the whole country is littering and illegal dumping. Millions are spent each year cleaning up after people who seem to think nothing of spoiling our beautiful countryside with their filth.

So it was good to see that the first initiative to come out of the closer working relationship between Councillors from Drogheda and East Meath is that a Drogheda Spring Clean Weekend, proposed by Councillor Elaine McGinty, will take place between Friday 4th to Sunday the 6th of March.

“Louth and Meath County Councils are coming together in a joint initiative which I hope will see not just a cleaner environment but be the start of something bigger for the development of both communities” Councillor Elaine McGinty said.

Both Councils are inviting all resident associations, community group, schools, sporting organisations, an individual or a few neighbours working together, to get involved, in the Drogheda Spring Clean weekend. It will take place from Friday to Sunday, 4th, 5th and 6th of March 2022.

We are looking for people to tackle a kilometre of roadway, park, street, lane in your local area and to make it litter and debris free. Louth and Meath County Councils will provide litter pickers, bags, gloves and hi-viz vests.

The bags of waste will be collected when your clean-up is finished.  Once you have registered you will be able to collect your free Clean Up pack from V and W Drogheda Recycling Centre, Mell, Drogheda, who are supporting this initiative.

To register to participate please contact either Meath or Louth County Council.

Contact Louth County Council by email at community@louthcoco.ie  or ring 042-9335457

Contact Meath County Council by email at environment@meathcoco.ie or ring 046-9097000.

“I want to thank both Louth and Meath Councils for embracing this idea and I would encourage as many people as possible to register.

“By getting involved it won’t be just about collecting litter, but a chance to bring us together and talk to one another about the issues affecting the area.”

But of course you don’t have to wait until March. If everyone cleaned the footpath and gutter outside their own hous eit wold make a huge difference.
