Embracing our mythological past
As part of the second phase of Drogheda’s iconic Urban Art Trail, DRAWDA, world-renowned Italian urban painter Vera Bugatti will showcase her incredible 3D work on the YGH building on Dominic Street.
Bugatti is an expert in anamorphic street painting, her work can be seen in cities in Europe, the United States, Mexico, and India. The Drogheda mural pays homage to key figures and moments from Ireland’s mythological past, adding a touch of magic to the town.
This mural will portray the Cailleach, the divine sorceress and mother goddess associated with the creation of the landscape and ancient monuments. The project is a collaborative effort by Droichead Arts Centre, Love Drogheda BIDS, and Louth County Council, curated by Dee Walsh in association with mythologist Anthony Murphy.
An audio trail accessible through QR codes next to each mural will take you on a journey based on Anthony Murphy’s retelling of the ancient stories, adapted by Gráinne Rafferty, performed by Niall O’Brien and Gráinne, with an original soundscape by Niall Gregory and editing by Sean McCluskey at Basement Sounds.
The magic of the Boyne Valley, part of Ireland’s Ancient East, comes alive as the art trail embraces the historical, archaeological, and mythical significance of the Boyne River. Drogheda’s Medieval town, with its ancient gates, sacred sites, and battlegrounds, serves as a perfect backdrop for celebrating Ireland’s mythological heritage freely.
In honour of the second phase of DRAWDA, Droichead Arts Centre hosts an exhibition showcasing some of the previous year’s Drawda murals, featuring interviews with mural artists, drawings, and photographs.
A unique highlight of the exhibition will be a temporary mural on the gallery’s back wall, created by Mack Signs a team of experienced signwriters and mural painters led by Cormac Dillon, inspired by the mythical characters of Buí and Englec, associated with the megalithic tomb of Knowth.
The Urban Art Trail breathes life into derelict public spaces and streets, infusing the town with visual vibrancy and a cascade of colours. DRAWDA brings together local, national, and international artists in a beautiful celebration of creativity.
