Midsummer 5k to raise funds for a Community Centre in Moneymore

Following on from the success of this year’s Scotch Hall Drogheda 10K, Drogheda and District Athletic Club take to the streets again at 8.00 pm on Friday the 17th of June for the popular Midsummer 5k.

This race has developed into a favourite in the racing calendar with big crowds togging out the take on the town centre course, starting and finishing on Fair Street.

This year’s event will be a fundraiser with 100% of proceeds raised going to the The Moneymore Consortium which was established in 2018 to advance the development of a Community Centre in the Moneymore area of North Drogheda.

This much needed facility will meet the growing need for space to deliver frontline services and for provision of a community hub to serve communities resident in the Moneymore and surrounding areas. The current members of the Consortium are Connect Family Resource Centre, Cable Youth Diversion Project, Moneymore Afterschool Club and Moneymore Community House.

Cliodhna Cunningham from the The Moneymore Consortium said ‘We’re delighted to team up Drogheda and District AC and the local Community Policing Gardai to organise this event. Like the sports clubs locally, our teams work in the heart of the community, delivering services to the people of Drogheda so it’s a perfect fit’.

‘There’s a great buzz about this event’ chairperson of Drogheda and District AC Ciara O Reilly said ‘After all the lockdowns it’s great to be out running races again and where better than the streets of Drogheda, with the added bonus of helping a community initiative like this’

The organisers have urged people interested in taking part to enter sooner rather than later to ensure a place in the race. The closing date for online entries is Thursday, June 16th at midnight. Online entry cost €20 and includes a bespoke race t-shirt for the first 300 entrants. Refreshments will be available after the race to all in the Barbican.

There will also be a very limited number of late entries available on a first come first served basis available at Race HQ, the Barbican on William St from 6pm.
