The Medical Missionaries of Mary Christmas Craft Fair used to be a big part of Christmas in Drogheda but sadly not in recent years. But now they are bringing it back!
Since the founding of the Medical Missionaries of Mary (MMM) in 1937, the Congregation has been devoted to helping the poorest of the poor by bringing medical and healing professional help.
The Sisters are still going strong with missions in East, West and Central Africa along with Brazil. As the complexity of Covid 19, rising prices, increased famine and drought and reduced resources continue the Sisters out in the Missions are seeing unprecedented poverty and starvation.
“We are trying our best to keep resources going out to the Sisters serving in the remote areas, but as we know charity giving is down around the world too since Covid 19. It’s a very bad situation,” said Sr Sheila Campbell, MMM who has been part of the Congregation for over 50 years.
Sr Sheila along with the staff of the MMM Communication were looking for inspiration for fundraising efforts for going forward when their answer came from the past!
Looking at former MMM publications they realised that Christmas Craft Fairs were part of former efforts to raise money for the mission. The team quickly got to work to bring the tradition back for this Christmas.
The Christmas Craft Fair will be from 11 am to 4pm on Saturday, 26th November, 2022. Admission is free. There will be a raffle with great prizes to raise money.
“Many talented local artists, woodworkers, crafters and jewellers will be joining us for the day. We will also have many handmade cards, crafts and gifts made by our own MMM Sisters,” Sr Sheila explains.
“There will be live Christmas music with choirs performing and a festive atmosphere. There will be free art activities for children.
For those who are interested in learning more about the MMM history in Drogheda and in the world, there will be tours available led by MMM Sisters at 2pm and 3pm. All events are free and open to the public.
