Meath and Louth County Councils to work together for climate change

Following recent negotiations by Labour Councillor Elaine McGinty, Meath and Louth County Councils are joining forces to take meaningful climate action.

The initiative, which is being led by Drogheda Tidy towns and Cllr McGinty of Meath County Council, will see the planting of native trees and hedgerows along both sides of the county boundary by the Dublin Road and Bryanstown Cross Route in Drogheda.

Cllr McGinty said: “This project will involve local engineers and climate action officers from both councils working together.

“We cannot strive and make progress on climate change unless we get the whole community working together. Drogheda Tidy Towns covers both Meath and Louth, and I am delighted for my part in bringing about positive changes that see progress on meeting our climate targets.

“As Cathaoirleach of Bettystown/Laytown Municipal District 2021, I initiated a crucial process aimed at creating a more collaborative relationship between Meath and Louth County Councils.

“What started as a joint clean-up day for both areas has now become an annual event called the ‘Green Kilometre’.

“It’s a great way for everyone in the community to get involved and do their part in protecting the environment and biodiversity in the area.”

More recently, to celebrate the rich history of Drogheda and East Meath, Cllr McGinty and Drogheda Tidy Towns working with Meath Leader Programme are working on the installation of art sculptures linking this ‘Green Kilometre’ area to the history of the River Boyne.

Cllr McGinty said: “It’s fantastic to see so many people in the area get involved on these green initiatives that are good for the community and good for the planet.

“Building communities that can thrive means we have to work towards finding solutions that are not limited by county boundaries but for the benefit of those who live and work in those areas.

“I hope that this project and others to come will help both counties to realise this share vision.”
