“The Council needs to find ways to utilise CCTV cameras to catch these criminals dumping their rubbish.”
The illegal dumping of rubbish around Drogheda needs to stop. Not only is it disgusting to look at, it is also ugly and unhealthy and is dragging what was once an attractive heritage town into the gutter.
Civic pride seems to have disappeared and our town has never looked so dirty and uncared for with dirt, dog crap, household waste and litter of all sorts strewn almost anywhere you care to look.
At a Council Borough meeting early last year it was revealed that the cost of cleaning up the mess was costing a million Euro a year.
That’s a million Euro that could have been much better spent on life enhancing things such as more playgrounds for our kids or a big community festival – remember the Maritime Festival?
In a statement released to Drogheda Life this week, independent Councillor Paddy McQuillan said people are “fed up” living near this illegal dumping.
“The Council needs to find ways to utilise CCTV cameras to catch these criminals dumping their rubbish” he said, “common sense solutions must prevail.”
Urging the council to address the problem as a matter of urgency, Councillor McQuillan said: “The continuous illegal dumping of rubbish on estates and in green areas around the town must become a matter of urgency for the council.
“I understand that the council workforce has been affected by Covid-19 and restrictions have been imposed, but this situation is getting out of hand. The town is filthy.
“To make matters worse it is my understanding that the council truck which would normally be used to clear illegal dumping was redeployed to grit roads during the cold snap.
“Some council workers believe that the truck will not be available to them any time soon. I have learned that the truck is damaged and is in a garage awaiting repairs.
“This may be, but the council still needs to sort out the dumped rubbish that litters our town.
“I do not understand why the council does not engage with Paddy Shields who they use to clear the aftermath of the bonfires” he said.
“This rubbish needs to be shifted and if the council have used this man before they should look to have him work with them on this urgent situation.
“At the end of the day the rubbish has been illegally dumped and it has been dumped in public spaces. The council must act now and address this issue immediately.”
