Mayor intercedes on behalf of people who received Covid jabs outside EU

Mayor of Drogheda Councillor James Byrne has responded to requests from several people who have received their Covid vaccinations in Northern Ireland or elsewhere outside the EU and are now having problems getting an EU Digital COVID Certificate.

“It was brought to my attention recently that Irish citizens vaccinated in the North due to work or residency have been unable to obtain an EU Digital COVID Certificate, as is their right as Irish and EU citizens” he told Drogheda Life.

“I know there was a backlog in issuing these certificates to those vaccinated in the South which is currently being worked on.

“Following representations I made to the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly TD I am delighted to hear that the Government is creating a specific portal to enable Irish citizens vaccinated outside of the EU, with vaccines authorised for use in Ireland, to obtain a COVID certificate valid in Ireland and across the EU.”

This portal will be released in a two-phase approach.

Phase 1 – applications from Irish citizens vaccinated in Northern Ireland who hold an NI COVID vaccination certificate with a QR code

Phase 2 – applications from Irish citizens vaccinated in other countries outside the EU

“This portal is currently being advanced on a cross departmental basis involving technical and process development, and resource management” Councillor Byrne said.

“Timelines for delivery will be clarified in the coming weeks. I look forward to seeing this rolled out particularly for our front line workers who travel north for work on a daily basis.”
