Local couple bring a bit of Drogheda with them wherever they go

Camper van transformed into a transport of delight by artist Rodney Thornton

Congress Avenue couple Robbie and Sandra Maher are busy people, he works as a steeplejack while Sandra is kept busy working with Dunnes Stores.

So they like to get away as often as they can and four years ago they bought a campervan for that very purpose.

This year things have been a bit different of course and the Covid travel restrictions have meant the Mahers had to put their travel plans on hold for many months.

But now that they are allowed to travel anywhere within Ireland they intend to make the most of it.

During the lockdown Sandra decided the campervan needed a makeover so she asked their friend and neighbour, local artist Rodney Thornton, to get creative and make their van stand out.

Rodney took them at their word and transformed the campervan into a transport of delight by covering the sides with painted murals depicting scenes from Drogheda including the viaduct, Millmount and other designs.

It is very colourful and certainly stands out, we spotted it across the full car park at the Drogheda Retail Park last Saturday.

Now whenever they go anywhere the Mahers bring a bit of Drogheda with them and people are always curious and asking to take photos.

“We’re delighted with it” Robbie said. “It’s something totally different, a talking point and it’s a nice bit of advertising for Drogheda also.

“We like to get away most weekends either just the two of us or sometimes we bring our three grandchildren, seven year-old Sophie and twins Harry and Isobel (4) with us and we all have great fun together.”

“It’s nice to know that we are bringing a nice piece of Drogheda with us wherever we go and people we meet often ask us about the town.”
