Live Events returning to Droichead Arts Centre in September

Treats in store for music and literature lovers

Droichead Arts Centre has announced that live events are set are to resume in their Stockwell Street theatre space on September the fourth.

The popular concert series “SOLO: Home from Home” is to return to its live in-person format having been moved online for the past couple of years or so.

Curated by SJ McArdle, SOLO: Home from Home has previously seen online performances from Maria Doyle Kennedy, Niamh Regan, Ollie Cole, Niamh Parsons and many more.

Now Droichead is delighted to bring it back in front of a live audience composed of socially distanced pods of two’s and three’s in their theatre over four Saturdays in September.

Each week’s show will feature two artists, making a total of eight engaging performances from some of the most innovative artists in Ireland today.

The series opens with singer/songwriter Joy Booth and sixth generation fiddler Clare Sands on 4 September followed by award winning folk singer Aoife Scott and poet/spoken word artist Dagogo Hart on 11 September.

Dagogo returns to the series following his participation in Solo@Home, a video podcast presented weekly on YouTube, earlier this year.

On 18 September singer/songwriter Mark Geary and indie rock and folk artist Seanie Vaughan will take to the stage. Closing the series will be acclaimed composer/pianist Michael Holohan and ambient neoclassical pianist/composer Úna Keane.

Curator SJ McArdle is a Drogheda based songwriter and musician who is known for his work with the Irish folk band Kern from 2013 to 2020.

More recently, as a solo artist, SJ has been working on a project called Port, a song-cycle based around research into the stories of Drogheda’s historic Port, produced in association with Droichead Arts Centre and an album is on the way.

Literature fans are also in for a treat on September 9 when LIVE Network presents the Scottish author Douglas Stuart, winner of the 2020 Booker Prize for his debut novel Shuggie Bain, which tells the heart wrenching story of the relationship between a young boy and his alcoholic mother, in conversation with the poet, novelist, and playwright Elaine Feeney.

Tickets for this special night are on sale now priced at just €15 at www.droichead.com.  Shuggie Bain has been published in over 30 countries and a TV adaptation is on the way.
