Drogheda’s live music scene has been through some rough times in recent years but the fightback is gathering pace in pubs all over town.
This week Odd Mollies have announced the third of their Showcase gigs which is happening on Saturday 20 April with a selection original and up and coming bands to show us what they’re made of.
Dundalk four-piece original Post Funk / Dance-Rock band Arco Arena make a welcome return to Odd Mollies having played there last year. Arco Arena describe their sound as “an original blend of heavy funk-focused shifting time signatures with straight up earworm hooks.”
We’ve absolutely no idea what that means but they go on to say that they draw inspiration from the “…heavy riffage of bands like Idles, LaFaro, Rage Against The Machine, And So I Watch You From Afar, and Pixies crossed with the unstoppable danceyness of Foals, Battles, Chic, Bloc Party, Adebisi Shank, Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Talking Heads and the funk stomp of Breakwater, The Bar-Kays, and Parliament Funkadelic.” Phew, that sounds brilliant! Check out their video for their track Docker Martins here:
But there’s more, they describe their live show as “a rolling cascade of starting-never-stopping riffs, vivid lyricism and surprise mid-song trade-offs between dual vocalists bassist Eoghan Maguire and guitarist Charlie Abbott, staccato interwoven instrumentals, and crowd singalongs.”
Arco Arena will be joined on the night by Dublin 3-piece Rock band Madra who don’t go for the hyperbole much. “Madra don’t care, they just wanna rock” their spokesperson said. “Madra don’t eat, they just wanna rock. Madra just wanna be Madra!” Expect plenty of original tunes and some covers thrown in for good measure.

Drogheda’s Rockin’ & Rollin Rockabilly favourites, The Marxmen make a welcome return to their local venue so expect a lively set from them.
Also returning to Odd Mollies will be Dutch Folk act Tik Tok Tammo who will be dropping by to showcase his talents covering Irish classics in his Groningen dialect, he played there in 2017 and people are still wondering what the hell it was all about.
Holding all this together (hopefully) and spinning the tunes will be local DJ and Celtic fan Andrew “Milish” Milne who needs no introduction at this stage of his career. Expect to hear the best of Ska, reggae and many other sounds from the eighties
