Joanna Byrne removed as co chair of Drogheda United

Local Sinn Fein TD Joanna Byrne has been officially removed as co-chairperson of Drogheda United.

The decision was announced by the Trivela Group which owns the club , in a statement issued this morning.

It follows the row over her demand for the FAI to boycott the upcoming Ireland v Israel match later this year in response to the genocide in Gaza.

Ms Byrne said she was speaking as the Sinn Fein spokesperson for Sport. The club however took a different view and felt she should not have made a public statement on the matter while she was co-chair of the club.

A few days ago Trivela requested Deputy Byrne resign from her position on the board but she steadfastly refused.

This morning they confirmed that she was gone from the board after being removed.

Trivela said:”  Trivela Group can confirm that , pursuant to its authority as sole shareholder of Drogheda United FC, Joanna Byrnwe has been removed by Trivela Group as a director of the club.

At this time, the Board of Directors consists of Benjamin Boycott, Marc Koretzky, Barton Lee, and the club CEO Rian Wogan. Mr Boycott will act as sole Chairperson for now, with the club set to appoint a local director and co-chair in due course.

Once again, we thank s Byrne for her longstanding and ongoing dedication to the club and its success.
