STATESIDE is Jackie Nickerson’s visual diary of a decade spent living and working across the United States.
The exhibition, running from March 28 to May 9, 2026, brings together images captured in a wide range of locations, from Chicago streets to military bases in Hawaii, from the landscapes of Utah to the skyscrapers of New York. Using a mix of cameras including medium format, 35mm, point and shoot, and iPhone, Nickerson recorded moments that reflect a particular time in America.

Rather than focusing on specific places, the work highlights recurring scenes and details that could belong almost anywhere. Fences, basketball courts, suburban homes, classrooms, gas stations and even battleships appear throughout, pointing to a sense of uniformity and everyday function.
Instead of presenting individual photographs in isolation, Nickerson created large prints and arranged them in overlapping sequences on her studio wall before photographing them again. The result is a layered and evolving narrative of contemporary America.
Jackie Nickerson is an American born British and Irish artist who divides her time between north County Louth and London.
STATESIDE is a Highlanes Gallery National Tour presented in partnership with Galway International Arts Festival and the Butler Gallery in Kilkenny, with support from the Arts Council of Ireland.
The exhibition also coincides with a new photobook edited by Kevin Gurry, with texts by Tom Downey and Colm Toibín. The book, designed by Jackie Nickerson and Matthias Langner of Steidi Design and published by Steidl, is available to purchase at the gallery for €35.
