Issue of who owns Mayne Graveyard in Clogherhead settled

“Council putting plans in place to ensure its upkeep” – Declan Power

As we approach the season for the blessing of the graves in parishes across the country, families who have lost loved ones will be busy cleaning around family graves, cutting grass and bringing flowers to remember those that have fallen before us.

Many graveyards are maintained by Parish caretakers, volunteers, Community Employment Schemes and Local authorities, ensuring that they remain in good condition for the many visitors who frequent them daily.

Mayne graveyard in Clogherhead is one that wasn’t getting the attention it deserves and  local Councillor Declan Power has received many phone calls from people who have loved ones laid to rest there, with many describing it as a ‘jungle’.

“These callers were concerned about the condition of the graveyard such as the long grass, weeds, loose kerbing, litter, etc. Many of them are senior citizens and found it difficult to manoeuvre around the graveyard and to maintain their family graves” he said.

“There was uncertainty as to who should be taking ownership and responsibility. When I investigated the issue both the Parish and Louth County Council said it wasn’t them.

“I spoke to many locals who were able to give me some historical background to the graveyard and it certainly plays a significant part of local heritage in Clogherhead.

“I reverted back to Louth Co. Council’s corporate section who investigated the issue further.

“I’m delighted to report that we now know that the Council has a vested interest in this graveyard and must now take responsibility for its maintenance.

“I am glad to report I am working now with Louth Co. Council who are putting plans in place provision for a caretaker and a work programme to ensure its upkeep’, said Cllr. Power.

He also commended the families who, over the last week, made a huge effort to improve the condition of the graveyard and to give reassurance that Louth Co. Council will now be committed to its future upkeep.

All blessing of the graves this year will be conducted privately due to Covid 19 restrictions. Mayne Graveyard private grave blessing will take place this on Sunday, June 27th.
