International and domestic recognition for Tredagh Academy boxers

Tredagh Boxing Academy members continue on their winning ways earning acclaim for their performances in this country and overseas.

Michael James (MJ) Mc Donagh represented Ireland in the Schools European IBA Boxing Championships in Banja Luka in Bosnia recently. In the first round he came up against a very big Russian Champion.

Although he boxed extremely well and did his club and country proud, MJ lost out narrowly in a very close judge’s decision to the eventual European Champion.

It really was a gallant, brave and technical performance in three closely contested rounds which will be a massive positive experience for him in his Boxing pathway and progression.

MJ made a bit of history being the first kid to represent Tredagh at the Schoolboy Championships. The club have had boxers contest the Junior and Youth Europeans but he’s the first at Schoolboy Level. Massive “Thank You” to ‘Irish Signage’ from Navan who sponsored his flags for the trip.

Following on from the European Silver medal she won earlier this year, Grace Conway captured her seventh National Title (out of her age) at the National stadium in the U 18 National World Championships qualifier. This brought Tredagh’s total to five All-Ireland Titles this year.

Emma O Gorman won gold at the Emerald International Box Cup after three great rounds against her Meath opponent in the final. Emma also boxed for the Leinster Girls Squad against the East Midland Regional English team in Wexford.

Going into the last round at one round each, Emma produced her best round catching her opponent with fantastic hard hitting jabs and back hand crosses to win the bout by a split decision.

The Academy entered six boxers into the recent Belfast Halloween International Cup with teams from all over Europe and Ireland entered.

On finals day there were some amazing bouts with Tredagh Boxers at the forefront. Andrew Mathews gave away a year in age to Sé O Neill (St. Canices ABC) in a nail biting contest. It was very tight right up to the last round where Andrew forced his opponent to a standing count to win by unanimous decision and take gold.

Also giving away a year in age was CeeJay Sheelin who faced opposition from Elite Boxing Club. Ceejay’s skill set was too much for the oncoming Elite man and he out boxed his opponent to win by unanimous decision and win the gold medal.

In his contest, John Collins boxed the bigger man from Sacred Heart Belfast and was beaten on a split decision in a contest that could have gone either way.

Simon Mc Donagh faced Dan Donnelly of Omagh Boxing Club and his counter punching skills appeared to edge each round as he won by a split decision and take the gold medal.

Cara Evans’ opponent whom she had beaten this year in the Ireland semi finals pulled out on finals day to declare her champion and take home the gold for Tredagh.

With five Gold Medals under their belt, Tredagh Boxing Academy was declared Best Club of the International and was awarded a fantastic Winners Belt for their efforts. Well done to all the boxers and coaches.

The club are actively involved in the Dublin Leagues each week now and are boxing next in the upcoming Leinster Michael Andrews Championships in Wexford. Congratulations also to Darragh Evans and Breanna Johnston who qualified as IABA boxing coaches from their 4 day course in Dublin recently.
