Litter louts are using an area of Calvary Cemetery in Drogheda as their own personal dumping ground.
Refuse and black bags have been left in a corner near the main entrance at Sunnyside, an area normally designated for dying plants and flowers removed from graves.
The matter has been raised by Councillor James Byrne, who has notified the local Litter Warden and is hopeful that increased patrols will take place in the area.
Cllr Byrne said: There was a significant dumping of black bags recently, along with other materials inside the graveyard in the bottom corner near the main entrance.
I have reported it to the litter warden. Shame on those responsible, and hopefully the evidence is there for fines to be issued.”
He also commended the Council for recent works on the Bryanstown Cross route, where hedges opposite Calvary Cemetery were cut back. He said the overgrowth had been providing cover for illegal dumping and that a large amount of litter had been removed.
Cllr Byrne added that considerable council resources were required to address the issue.
