History and Heritage walking tour of Drogheda

Community Historian Brendan Matthews will lead a History and Heritage walking tour of Drogheda on Wednesday evening June 30th beginning at the old Jail in Scarlet Street (formerly Eddie`s Hardware), at 7.30pm.

Titled “From the Drogheda Jail to Bolton Square”, Brendan will begin the evening speaking about the origins of the prison and some of its inmates before moving along to the open green, north of Magdalene Tower overlooking Hardmans Gardens, where Brendan will relay a fascinating tale for the first time regarding the period when Drogheda was made up of two towns.

The tour will then move the short distance to the open green space area between Patrick Street and Rope Walk where the story of a gallant Irish Martyr and a native of Drogheda will be retold.

The next stop will be the large open area of Bolton Square, off Fair Street, where the evening will be brought to a close with the extraordinary tale of the Fenian Movement, made up of both men and women in Drogheda during the 1860`s.

There is no-charge for this event but donations for the continued research and study of community history will be gratefully received.
