Hebble Sand Update- vessel to be refloated on Wednesday

Councillor Kevin Call has been liaising with the environmental and engineering sections of Louth County Council on the situation regarding the Hebbble Sand dredger which sank last Tuesday and has been sitting on the bottom of the Boyne ever since leaking oil and other pollutants into the river.

Today Cllr. Callan has issued the following statement:

“The update is that the seals around the rudder perished/failed, the substance that has escaped is diesel. The vessel contains hundreds of litres of diesel.

“More floating barriers are to be added to, to better protect against escape of pollutant.

“The vessel is to be re floated on Wednesday and then will need to be moved to be dismantled at a different location, this I understand will not happen on Wednesday.

“For over a year I have been calling for the vessels removal to protect our river and estuary. I will continue to do so until this is resolved.”
