Harty’s Cottage development will increase congestion on the Ballymakenny Road – Callan

The failure to deliver the Northern Cross Route, which was designed to take traffic away from Drogheda and at the same time provide land for housing and other development, is beginning to have severe implications for the development of the town.

A case in point is the proposed development on the two acre site behind Harty’s Cottage.

Councillor Kevin Callan says that without funding for Northern across Route for foreseeable future we can’t afford to congest this residential area any further.

“I have been meeting and talking to local residents in the vicinity of Harty’s Cottage who are extremely concerned about the size and the scale of the development” he said.

“After the first application was not validated by Louth County Councils planning section, we have been waiting for the application to be resubmitted and this has now occurred” he said.

“Like local residents, I will be making an objection on the basis that another 100 or so cars will simply not fit in the area, will cause cars to be parked in neighbouring estates and along the Ballymakenny Road and cause traffic congestion to get even worse.

He says this development will bring with it serious safety risks for pedestrians and cyclists.

“We all know how congested the areas around this junction are and also how limited the area is for safe car parking along paths” he said.

“With the Northern Cross Route having no current viable way to be funded and with little or no prospect of it getting underway in the years ahead, we must ensure we do not do irreparable damage to the area by congesting with more traffic which will create an intolerable situation for current residents of the area” he said.

The deadline for observations/objections for the second application is 31st August and the Reference Number is 21950.
