Following yet another collision at the busy junction of the Cockle Road at Ballymakenny Cross, Councillor Michelle Hall has repeated her calls for Louth County Council to immediately install traffic calming measures and has also appealed to drivers to slow down.
“I came across the incident on my way home from Tullyallen and my heart sank when I saw the emergency crews at the scene” Cllr. Hall said.
“I have been raising the need for traffic calming measures, reinstatement of a missing sign and line markings for several years” she added.
As recently as last month’s Drogheda Council meeting, Councillor Hall expressed her frustration with engineers about their lack of action especially after a motion she proposed for traffic calming measures at this location had been fully supported by the council last summer.
“There have been several serious road traffic accidents at this crossroads and Gardai at the scene also expressed concerns about the safety of the junction” Cllr. Hall told Drogheda Life.
“I’ve been told that no-one had life threatening injuries and I hope all involved make a full recovery from any injury incurred but also the shock.
“Since the PANCR opened, there has been an increase in the volume of traffic using this rural route. Louth County Council need to act soon before a life is needlessly lost.
“In the meantime, I’m appealing to drivers to slow down and pay attention when driving.”
