King Charles 111 of England is probably a little bit too busy today to think back to the time in 1995 when he met Drogheda’s former Mayor, Frank Godfrey. Frank on the other hand remembers the occasion vividly.
Frank wasn’t actually invited to today’s coronation, but he’s not bitter about that obvious oversight and has invited the King to visit Drogheda next time he’s in Ireland.
He told Drogheda Life that he has written to the King to congratulate him and remind him of their meeting back in 1995 and to wish him the best of luck in his new role.
“I had the honour of meeting the future King (Prince Charles) in 1995. It is a moment I will never forget” Frank said.
“Sir Patrick Mayhew, the then Northern Ireland Secretary, introduced me to him in my capacity as Mayor of Drogheda, whilst attending a garden party at Hillsborough Castle.
“I will always remember our handshake and conversation. On that memorable occasion I was accompanied by my late Mother Mary Kate, as Lady Mayoress of Drogheda, Des Clinton and Isobel Lynch Sanroma.
“Prince Charles struck me as someone with a good sense of humour and very charming. “When Sir Patrick Mayhew introduced me to him, he said “I have heard about this man”.
“We spoke about Irish/ British relations and how we must strive to work hard for peace and reconciliation. He had a deep appreciation and knowledge of Irish affairs.
“I have no doubt he will visit the Republic of Ireland during his reign as King of England. I hope he will include Drogheda in his itinerary as I have invited him in the past.
“I believe Charles Ill will make a good King as he was well tutored by his late Mother Queen Elizabeth. I have written and sent my best wishes to his Majesty the new King this week.”
