First Hunger Strike Commemoration in Drogheda in three years

Louth Sinn Féin will host its annual Hunger Strike commemoration on Saturday 3rd September to mark the 41st anniversary of the 1981 Long Kesh hunger strike in which ten men died.

The Hunger Strike changed the political landscape on the island of Ireland and saw the mass mobilisation of people throughout the country in support of the prisoners’ five demands.

The parade will assemble at Ballsgrove shops at 2.30 pm and, lead by a piper, will make its way to the hunger strike memorial at Ballsgrove Gate.

This is the first in-person Hunger Strike commemoration to be held in Drogheda in three years and will be chaired by Louth and East Meath TD Imelda Munster with Derry republican Martina Anderson giving the main speech.

Martina is a former republican prisoner and currently holds the position of Head of European Outreach and is the Sinn Féin Representative to Europe, working to secure European support for an Irish Unity Referendum as set out in the Good Friday Agreement.

All are welcome to attend and a function will be held in The Thatch afterwards.
