Louth Library Service launches “Border 100”, Histories and Reflections, a virtual symposium, 27th October-6th November 2021
The Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Councillor Pio Smith, and Chief Executive Joan Martin have launched one of the final events of the Council’s ‘Decade of Centenaries’ programme, Border 100 – a virtual series of lectures and panel discussions.
Dr. Thomas Tormey, the Council’s Historian in Residence 2021, has drawn together a significant number of renowned local, national and international historians and academics for the lectures including: Dexter Govan, Donal Hall, Mary Harris, Róisín Healy, Leeann Lane, Eunan O’Halpin, Colin Reid, Peter Rigney, Brian Hanley, Ian D’alton and Tim Wilson
Louth County Council has followed the guidance of the Expert Advisory Group on Centenary Commemorations throughout its programming and two of the significant events that they highlighted will be covered by the symposium.
These include the foundation of Northern Ireland, Partition and the drawing of the Border; and the experience of minorities and border communities in Ireland from 1918 – 2023.
Individual talks will also cover the role of women; the role of the labour movement; the experiences of nationalists and of unionists on both sides of the border; and comparative partitions in Europe, post 1918, to emphasise that Ireland’s experience was not unique.
A number of panel discussions will also take place exploring various themes around the Boundary Commission; The Church of Ireland, Irish Anglicans, and Partition; and The North in southern politics (6th November).
Councillor Smith congratulated Louth Library Service on their work over the past number of years in programming for the Centenary and acknowledged the work of Dr Thomas Tormey, the Historian in Residence, who has worked tirelessly in curating this symposium.
