“We urgently need better active travel infrastructure to make it safer to walk and cycle”
The Cathaoirleach of South Drogheda-East Meath Municipal District, Councillor Stephen McKee, has said the refusal of planning permission for the Drogheda to Mornington section of the Boyne Greenway was very disappointing.
“As we all know, the potential positive impact the Greenway could have as a local recreational and tourist route” he said.
“Greenways are a huge success around the country and it would be fantastic to have one here, serving families and the growing population of South Drogheda and East Meath.
“This decision is not a surprise though. The project has been refused because An Bord Pleanála felt that the project could adversely affect the integrity of the Boyne Coast and Estuary Special Area of Conservation.
“This was flagged early on as a possible major stumbling block and it has proven to be the case” he said.
‘What’s needed now is a new direction and focus. It was always clear to me, as proven by the decision, that the route chosen was wrong, not only because of the Special Area of Conservation, but because of the negative impact on residents on Tower Road, Mornington.
“It is important that a major project such as this commands the support of those who live along its route and who will be directly impacted by it.
“I raised concerns in my own submission to An Bord Pleanala on behalf of residents along Tower Road and Mornington Court about them losing parts of their front gardens and boundary walls amongst other issues.”
Cllr. McKee says he has written to the Boyneside Trail Committee to offer his help and support in progressing the Greenway project.
“I will do all I can to assist” he said. “With the increasing population in East Meath, we urgently need better active travel infrastructure in place to make it safer to walk and cycle and to provide enjoyable outdoor amenities for families.”
