Urgent action needed to ensure it remains open says Munster
An interim examiner has been appointed by the High Court after Premier Periclase Ltd, which employs 94 workers at its factory on the Boyne Road in Drogheda, sought the protection of the courts citing financial difficulties caused by a doubling of energy prices in the past year.
The court heard the company, owes Bord Gais €2.5 million and electricity supplier Energia €900,000.
Reacting to the news, local Sinn Féin TD Imelda Munster described the developments as “very worrying”, and has written to Minister for Enterprise Leo Varadkar asking him to ensure that no stone is left unturned in seeking a solution to the financial problems at the company.
“I understand that an interim examiner has been appointed by the High Court due to financial difficulties caused by the sharp rise in energy prices and that Bord Gáis has threatened to cut the supply of gas to the company within weeks if they do not make a substantial payment, which the company says it is unable to make” Deputy Munster said.
She added that Premier Periclase, which has been in Drogheda for 45 years, is of enormous economic importance to Drogheda and that it would be “absolutely devastating” to the town if it were to close.
“It is absolutely vital that these jobs are protected and that the company can continue operations.
“I have written to the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise Leo Varadkar asking him to ensure that no stone is left unturned in finding a solution to these matters.
“We need to examine every option available to ensure that these jobs are protected.”
