Congratulations to the girls in Ms. Costigan’s fourth class in Duleek G.N.S who have beaten schools from throughout the country to win a science competition called “START” on Friday in Galway.
START, it stands for Schools Teaching Awareness of Randomised Trials, helps students to become the scientists of tomorrow and critical thinkers of today.
Needless to say, the girls were all thrilled, and deservedly so, and so were all their Mammies and Daddies, family and friends who were waiting to welcome them home.
Every day children are faced with health claims, some reliable and some not so reliable, but how do we help children see the “fake news” from the credible information?
The purpose of the competition is to help students become aware of the randomised clinical trial process, rather than answer a ground-breaking question.
It challenges primary school children to learn more about randomised controlled trials by answering a fun question and using the rigorous steps of a clinical trial.
The girls in Duleek G.N.S. chose to investigate if 10 minutes of daily ambulatory activity have an effect on speed and mood in 10 year olds. The girls have carried out much research on the benefits of being active for both fitness and mood and are excited to analyse their results when they complete the trial next week.
