Dublin Road cycling and walking infrastructure plan progressing well

€415,000 allocated for design and concept work

Labour Councillor Pio Smith says that the move to create a new cycling and walking infrastructure from the Bridge of Peace to the Dublin Road is progressing well.

“Over the past five years I have engaged with engineers on the council for the need to bring walking and cycling infrastructure to the Dublin Road” he told Drogheda Life.

“I am happy to say that €415,000 has been allocated to this project for 2023 for design and concept work.

An important part of the overall project will be the requirement to widen the railway bridge on the Dublin Road.

“Louth County Councils Active Travel Section are liaising with the National Transport Authority and Dart North East Project to update them on the proposed walking and cycling route.

“Engineers are also making a presentation on the importance of widening the bridge as part of the works that are due in order to bring the Dart to Drogheda.”

All of the Drogheda Councillors are backing the project and the Mayor has agreed to contact the NTA to inform them of the importance of this project for the town.

“A public consultation process will take place later this year when members of the public can make their view known. I would encourage as many people as possible to contact the NTA and request that they allocate funding to widening the bridge.

“This project when complete will significantly reduce both car journeys on the Dublin Road and emissions and will have a positive impact on Drogheda.”
