Drogheda United has confirmed the signing of defender Edwin Agbaje on a two year contract ahead of the 2026 season.
The 21 year old arrives at United following an impressive spell with Sligo Rovers during the second half of the 2025 campaign. Agbaje joined the Bit O’Red in August and went on to make 11 senior appearances, earning the club’s Player of the Month award for September after a series of strong performances.
Before his time in the League of Ireland, Agbaje developed his game in England after coming through the academy ranks at Shamrock Rovers. He spent five seasons with Ipswich Town, where he built a strong reputation at underage level and was named the club’s Academy Player of the Year in 2023. During his time with Ipswich, he also gained valuable first team experience through loan spells with Sutton United and Yeovil Town, and made his senior debut for the club in an EFL Trophy match against Cambridge United in 2022.
An Irish underage international, Agbaje becomes the fourth new addition to Kevin Doherty’s squad as preparations continue for the 2026 season.
Speaking on the signing, manager Kevin Doherty said he was delighted to secure the defender’s services, describing him as an excellent player who attracted interest from a number of clubs. He said strengthening in that area of the pitch was a priority and praised Agbaje’s performances in the league last season. Doherty added that discussions with the player over recent weeks had been very positive and he was pleased Agbaje had chosen Drogheda United.
Agbaje said he is excited to join what he described as a big club in the division and is looking forward to being part of its ambitions going forward. He said conversations with the manager and club officials made the move an easy decision and he is eager to push on and contribute to the team’s progress in the seasons ahead.
