Following on from the announcement that the D Hotel will be used to shelter international protection applicants, the Green Party representatives in the area have sent an unequivocal message of support and welcome to the new neighbours.
Green Party Rep for Drogheda Rural, Anthony Murphy, said:
“We have a moral and legal responsibility to provide shelter to those who come to our country fleeing war and persecution. Over the past two years, communities across Ireland have demonstrated great solidarity and welcomed those who come here seeking refuge.”
Speaking about the negative reaction from sections of the community Anthony went on to say:
“We had a similar negative reaction to international protection applicants being accommodated in Termonfeckin in January last year, the same scaremongering was being broadcast from the same social media keyboard warriors.
“Over time the new residents have integrated into the local community and are now valued members of the local community. I believe the success of the integration of the residents in Termonfeckin will be replicated here in Drogheda.
“I strongly condemn any attempt to promote division and hostility towards those who come here seeking safety. I trust the people of Drogheda and know they will join me in welcoming those seeking protection. We are a compassionate and diverse community and I believe that our town will not be found wanting.”
Michael Kennedy Green Party Rep for Drogheda Urban went on to say:
“I have seen first-hand the welcoming and supportive nature of the people of Drogheda, especially for those in need. Just last week Drogheda For All and Drogheda Stands With Palestine raised over €4,500 for medical aid in Gaza.
“Local groups have been out showing their support for those coming to Ireland in search of safety and protection since the start. Drogheda is a diverse town and proud of it, our town is full of people from all over, they’re our colleagues, our school friends, and our neighbours, this town welcomes all and will continue to do so.“
