The Irish Mythology Podcast, produced in Drogheda by Marcas Ó hUiscín and Stephanie Ní Thiarnaigh has been nominated in the Best Fiction category of this year’s Irish Podcast Awards, which will be held on September 16th at the Trinity Theatre in Dublin.
Marcas and Stephanie have been making the podcast since March 2020 and since then, listener figures for each episode have grown from hundreds to thousands, with it regularly featuring in the charts among top culture podcasts in Ireland and abroad.
Each episode features a dramatic adaptation of a story from Irish Mythology followed by a discussion segment about the origins and meaning of the myth, taking a deep dive into the popular and less well known stories and characters of Celtic legends.
Many of the stories covered so far have local significance, such as the episode on Boann and the origins of the river Boyne, and their serialised retelling of The Wooing of Étain which features Newgrange.
Speaking of the nomination, Marcas said: “It’s a great honour to be nominated for this award as an independent podcast, having our name up there among some giants of the podcast world.
“We do all of the research, writing, production, editing and promoting ourselves. But we produce each episode hoping to entertain and make mythology accessible in a high quality way and we’re delighted that this is recognised by the Irish Podcast Awards.”
You can listen to the Irish Mythology Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and all the usual podcast outlets and follow @irishmythologyP on twitter for regular updates on new episodes.
Nominees in other categories include The Blindboy Podcast, The 2 Johnnies, the Tommy, Hector and Laurita podcast, Pat Kenny, David McWilliams, The GAA Social and the RTÉ Documentary on One. The panel of media industry judges is chaired by RTÉ and BBC presenter and broadcaster Angela Scanlon.
