Members of The Drogheda Civic Trust laid a wreath at the Halpin and Moran memorial on the Marsh Road yesterday, Ash Wednesday.
Trust Chairperson Denis Cummins said it was important that civic society remembered the sacrifice of both Halpin and Moran on the one hundredth anniversary of their deaths.
“While the date of the killings was February 9th it was also Ash Wednesday in 1921 and that is why we picked today” Mr. Cummins said.
Vice Chair Michael O’Dowd said the Drogheda Civic Trust had an ambitious educational programme that had to be severely curtailed over the past year but that remembering Halpin and Moran on this important anniversary was always a priority.
“Going forward we intend to commemorate other seminal dates over the coming months, north and south, but that the particular events in Drogheda were of prime importance.
“We need to acknowledge their sacrifice and continue to work for reconciliation and understanding across the island.”
