Vigil to take place at St. Peter’s Church, West Street at midday on Saturday
I pray for every soldier who now defends my homeland – Ukrainian woman living in Drogheda
The people of Drogheda, South Louth and East Meath are being asked to stand with the local Ukrainian community at a vigil that will take place at St. Peter’s Church on West Street at 12 noon this Saturday, 5th March.
The event is being organised by Deputy Ged Nash and members of the local Ukrainian community.
Deputy Nash said;
“I reached out to local Ukrainian friends who have made Louth and Meath their home. We met on Monday evening and we agreed that the first thing we should organise is a public event or vigil in Drogheda.
“The vigil will allow our community to unite and show their support and solidarity to the people of Ukraine and their democratically elected government.
“We will be sending a strong message to Russia that the people of our community and across Ireland stand full square with them against this illegal invasion and war, against the occupation of Ukraine and against Russian aggression of all kinds.”
“Speaking to local Ukrainian friends such as Olga Duka, Natasha Ibanez and Helen Babiya one can only be inspired by the courage and heroism of their families and fellow Ukrainians.
“I know that local people are anxious to donate money and items that may be needed to support the people of Ukraine. It is important that this is done in the right way and that humanitarian aid is directed to where it is needed most and through professional, reputable and transparent organisations and agencies.
“This work is progressing and we will provide updates on how the Ukrainian community believes we can most effectively help on my social media platforms in the coming days.”
Drogheda Life asked Helen Babiya, above), a Ukrainian national who has lived in Drogheda for twenty years told Drogheda Life for her thoughts on the situation on her homeland and she said that she simply cannot get over how her “beautiful peaceful and blooming Ukraine” is in flames after Russian enemy troops covered the entire country.
“How could one believe that in 21st century people will be sheltering in an underground basements to hide from bombarding” she asked.
“Russia, I beg on everything you hold sacred, stop this bloodthirsty war, leave my country, stop the killings!
“My Ukraine, I pray to God please stay strong! I pray for every soldier who now defends my homeland. Children may not see their fathers again, Mothers may not see their children again.
“This will never be forgiven.”
I also thank our President Volodymyr Zelenskyy who is bravely staying with his people every day and night. The whole world is afraid of Russia and only one country right in the middle of Europe is not dropping on its knees before them.
I pray for you, my Ukraine. Glory to You and Glory to your Heroes! 🇺🇦💙💛
