Drogheda 10k going virtual this year

The May bank holiday weekend has always been a hugely busy and exciting time for Drogheda 10k organising committee as the hugely popular road race took over the streets of Drogheda. The weather, the music, the hype, it’s always been such a buzz, which was really missed last year.

They are going to go with a virtual race this year. Although they can’t recreate it in it’s entirety, there is scope to run your own virtual 10k wherever you might be.

Athletics Ireland Club Coaches will issue six week training plans starting from Sunday this week, so that we can all train together whilst apart with a common goal, our very own 10k.

“Covid compliance will be crucial for all participants, but let’s do our best to paint Drogheda town red on the May Bank holiday weekend” said a club spokesperson.

We plan to spend the next 6 weeks helping participants prepare for their virtual 10k by assisting them with virtual coaching and training plans from athletics Ireland qualified coaches to help them achieve their goal.

“It’s very sad that we will not get to run this race in large numbers using the fabulous new ramparts route, but we will be together in spirit as we take part individually.

“When Covid struck last year, none of us knew what to expect in terms of athletics and road racing for quite some time. We held out hope for an adjusted 10k in some format throughout the year, but sadly this was not to be in 2020, as we entered lockdown after lockdown.

“Drogheda & District AC rely solely on fundraising from our Race Series to continue to develop and grow our club. With the funds raised from races over the years we have been able to develop our grass field into a top-class athletics facility.

“We have installed an 800m all-weather running track, changing rooms, 100 vehicle car park, and have hosted club, provincial and schools athletics competitions. Every race entry we have received for the Drogheda 10k for the last ten years has contributed to this development. Every penny we raise is pumped back into our club and to local athletics.

“We have a fabulous t-shirt and medal, entry is just €25 including postage.

“Social media is going to be buzzing for the next six weeks as we encourage everyone to share their training photos and progress.
