Next Friday night, September 17th, is Culture Night and Highlanes Gallery in Laurence Street have organised a couple of interesting events to mark the occasion.
At 5.00 pm there’s a free outdoor traditional music session under the canopy when Ceol Le Clapsolas return after a triumphant performance in 2019 during the Fleadh Cheoil.
Then at 7.00 pm, across the street in the former Methodists Church, there’s a Courtyard Talk by the author Dr. David Dickson, who will discuss his new publication ‘The First Irish Cities’ which focuses on Drogheda’s importance in the 18th Century.
In his book Dickson traces the emergence of the largest Irish urban centres during a period of exceptional development. Focusing on ten cities between the mid-seventeenth and early nineteenth centuries – he explores the underlying patterns in their physical, social and cultural evolution and looks at how these relate to the complex legacies of a violent past.
Beautifully illustrated, this account reveals both the distinctive nature of Ireland’s cities and, through the Irish diaspora, how influential they would become beyond the country’s shores.
