“Crucial Step” as Julianstown Traffic Works Finally Set to Proceed

Plans to move ahead with the long-awaited Julianstown Traffic Management Scheme have taken a step forward after Meath County Council agreed to proceed to tender for construction.

The R132 traffic calming works, originally due in 2023, were delayed to accommodate Uisce Éireann’s major pipeline project along the same route. With that project now pushed back until at least early 2026, councillors voted to press ahead with the traffic scheme rather than wait further.

Local councillor Sharon Tolan, who tabled the motion, said residents had been left “in limbo” by repeated delays. She stressed that the measures are urgently needed to improve safety and quality of life in the village, which has long struggled with heavy traffic volumes.

Alongside the traffic calming project, consultants are also studying longer-term options under the Julianstown Traffic Relief Scheme, formerly the Julianstown Bypass, with further measures to be considered subject to Department of Transport approval.

Cllr. Tolan said the latest decision is “a crucial step in ensuring that the scheme is finally delivered.”
