Gardaí, RNLI, BFRRS and Coast Guard all called out over weekend
The heat wave has meant that huge crowds have descended on our beaches and the coastal areas generally, especially in this year of staycations which in turn has kept our rescue services very busy.
Last Sunday, 25th July, was World Drowning Prevention Day when people were urged to take great care when in, on or near the water but many didn’t get the message.
On Sunday evening strollers on Clogherhead pier were startled when a driverless car rolled across the pier and into the water.
It is not known if there was a fault with the car or how it had started to roll while its owner was walking on the head, but the rescue services including Coast Guard, Gardaí and the Boyne Fishermen’s Rescue and Recovery Service (BFRRS) were all involved in first ascertaining whether or not there had been anyone in the car and then removing it from the water.
When the owner of the car returned from his walk he went into shock when he discovered what had happened and was comforted with cups of tea from the Kirwans food wagon.
Whilst they were attending to the Clogherhead Pier incident the BFRRS received another call reporting a male in a distressed state at the water’s edge close to Fiddler Case Pier in Drogheda.
A second inshore rescue boat was launched and proceeded to the scene and located the man who thankfully, was alright.
Mornington Beach
Also on Sunday Drogheda Coast Guard responded to reports of four people who had got themselves into difficulty in the water around the rocks on Mornington Beach.
They immediately despatched a crew to the scene but when they arrived at the scene the four people had been assisted from the water by a member of the public and were safe and sound apart from cuts and bruises from clambering over the rocks.
Clogherhead RNLI
Just before four on Saturday afternoon, Clogherhead Lifeboat received a report of two children missing from Termonfeckin beach. Just as the boat was about to enter the water however, it was reported that all was well and the callout was stood down.
