Craobh na Bóinne launch Seachtain na Gaeilge 2022 in Drogheda

On Wednesday evening, Craobh na Bóinne, a branch of Conradh na Gaeilge in Drogheda, launched Seachtain na Gaeilge 2022 in Five Good Things Café.

Seachtain na Gaeilge is the biggest Irish Language festival in Ireland and the world! Lots of events are being organised all around the country to promote Irish language and culture!

The event opened with musicians from the local Comhaltas branch, which set the scene for the evening. Emer Nic Uidhir, Chairperson of the local branch, welcomed everyone and briefly spoke about the Branch of Conradh na Gaeilge in the town.

Craobh na Bóinne was established after the second Fleadh Ceoil  in 2019, to promote the Irish language around the town. It was a great honour, therefore, that the branch had been chosen to host the Leinster launch of Seachtain na Gaeilge 2022. Mayor James Byrne then spoke about his grá for Irish and his enthusiasm to promote and inspire others to continue to practice their cúpla focal.

Tómás Ó hEochaidh, one of the founders of Scoil Aonghusa, told of the history of Gaeilge in Drogheda in the 60’s and 70’s. Niall Sloan, Conradh na Gaeilge – Dundalk, spoke of the history of Gaeilge in Louth in general, and the links it has with Gaeilge in Ulster.

Seán Ó Murchadha from Conradh na Gaeilge, congratulated the branch for their enthusiasm in promoting Irish in Drogheda.

There was a beautiful rendition of ‘Falling Slowely’ as Gaeilge by Orla McDermott which was followed by dancers from the Robinson School of Irish Dancing.

Newly elected president of Conradh na Gaeilge, Paula Melvin, closed the night, again congratulating the local branch for a great launch and start to Seachtain na Gaeilge 2022.
