Comyn urges Fast-Track approval as Marymount NS nears inclusion in new school building List

Senator Alison Comyn has welcomed fresh indications from the Department of Education that Marymount National School in Ballsgrove could be included in the next round of capital project approvals expected before Christmas.

Speaking in the Seanad, Senator Comyn described the extremely poor condition of the 60-year-old building, outlining the daily difficulties faced by pupils and staff. She said the school is dealing with rodent problems, damp throughout the building and classrooms so cold that young children often keep their coats on during lessons.

“This isn’t a scene from centuries ago. It is the reality in Marymount National School today,” she told the Minister.

Built in 1969, the school now suffers from extensive structural issues, including leaking roofs, inadequate insulation and overcrowded learning spaces. Senator Comyn also highlighted the lack of suitable facilities for children with special educational needs, pointing out that the school has only one small SEN room for six pupils.

“The teachers are doing extraordinary work in conditions no educator or child should have to endure,” she said. “The new school is not simply welcome, it is essential.”

The planned development includes a 20-classroom building with four dedicated SEN classrooms. However, the project has faced several setbacks in recent years, including delays, planning challenges and the reduction of the original 24-classroom proposal.

Senator Comyn said she was encouraged by the Minister’s response, which suggested Marymount may finally be included in the upcoming capital programme announcement.

“This is long overdue. Staff, parents and children have waited for years. They have done their part. Now the State must do its part. These children and their teachers deserve a safe, warm and modern school where they can learn and thrive.”

She added that confirmation of the project before Christmas would be a significant step forward for the school community and for Drogheda.
