Fianna Fáil General Election Candidate in Louth, Alison Comyn, has said that the launch by her party colleague, Minister for Sport and Physical Education, Thomas Byrne, of the ‘SPORTUILE’ project for the Drogheda and East Meath area is a good example of how sport can unite communities.
The project aims to deliver on the objectives of the Drogheda Implementation Plan through the medium of Sport and Physical Activity.
“We all know the benefits, both mentally and physically of sport, but it can also unite communities and give people a real sense of identity” Comyn said.
“Driving Change Through Sport will provide support, opportunities and initiatives that are proven to improve physical and mental health, reduce crime levels, provide positive outlets for people of all ages and abilities, and in doing so, bring our communities closer together.
“It is just another one of the fantastic projects to be brought over the line with help from the Drogheda Implementation Board and there is no doubt it will make a huge difference over the next five years to hundreds of participants in Louth and East Meath.”
Minister Thomas Byrne said he was delighted to launch Driving Change Through Sport. “The 5 year project has secured €200,000 a year, from my Department through Sport Ireland to employ three Sports Development staff to work directly in the communities of Drogheda and East Meath” he said.
“Meath and Louth County Councils will each provide an additional €60,000 in funding to support the work of SportUile in these communities.
“These additional resources will provide support to local sporting clubs and organisations in providing more opportunities for sporting and physical activities which will help develop safer and better communities.”
